Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has signed a two-year contract with the La Liga club

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has signed a two-year contract extension with the La Liga club.

The 47-year-old Argentine, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season, has committed to the club until June 2020.

He is the longest-serving current La Liga manager, having been appointed in 2011.

Simeone, who triumphed as a player in Atlético de Madrid in the 90s, returned as its coach in December 2011, leading the equipment to win the UEFA Europa League in Bucharest against Athletic de Bilbao that same season.

The Argentinian manager would finish his first complete campaign, the 2012-13, with two titles: the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea and the King’s Cup against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

In the 13-14 season, Simeone led Atlético de Madrid to win their tenth League title and to play the Champions League final.

His side finished Champions League runners-up twice – in 2014 and 2016, both times losing to city rivals Real Madrid – but also won the Europa League in 2012 and the Spanish Cup in 2013.

This season, he starts his seventh season as Atlético’s coach, becoming the manager of LaLiga that has been at the head of his team longer, and only Arsene Wenger surpasses him on the European top flight benches.

Atletico began this season with a 2-2 draw at newly promoted Girona, before thrashing Las Palmas 5-1. They next play away to Valencia on Saturday.

Simeone originally agreed a deal that ran until 2020 two years ago, in March 2015, but he and the club agreed to a two-year reduction in September 2016.
