Former deputy senate president, Ibrahim Mantu, is dead some sources close to his family has said.
He reportedly died early on Tuesday morning in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
He expected to be buried at 2pm today according to Islamic rites.
Mantu, who hailed from Gindiri, in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, was an influential political figure in Nigeria for several years.
During the aborted third republic, he vied for the Chairmanship of the National Republican Congress, NRC, one of the two registered political parties.
Condoling with the Mantu family, Senate President Ahmad Lawan said, “Mantu had a brilliant political career which he capped with the quality representation he provided the people of Plateau Central District as their two-term Senator between 1999 and 2007.
“As Deputy Senate President, Mantu played the role with great energy and finesse, which earned him the respect and admiration of his colleague Distinguished Senators.
“The former Deputy Senate President lived a life of service to his people and to the entire nation. He left his imprints at the Senate, having served creditably well in his days at the Upper Chamber.”
