Crystal Palace claimed the first European trophy in their history after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the Conference League final thanks to a decisive goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The French striker scored early in the second half at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, tapping home from close range after Adam Wharton’s effort was pushed into his path by goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.

The victory capped a remarkable spell under outgoing manager Oliver Glasner, who leaves Selhurst Park after guiding Palace to the FA Cup, Community Shield and now Conference League success within two and a half years.

Both clubs were appearing in their first-ever European final, and the opening stages reflected the occasion with few clear-cut opportunities.

Rayo threatened through Alemao and Unai Lopez during the first half, while Palace’s best chance before the interval came when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide from a pinpoint delivery by Wharton.

Palace eventually broke the deadlock six minutes after the restart. Wharton unleashed a powerful strike that Batalla could only parry into the path of Mateta, who reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

The goal marked Mateta’s 16th of the season and added another highlight to an impressive campaign after a proposed January move to AC Milan collapsed because of a knee injury.

Rayo pushed for an equaliser late in the game, with Yeremy Pino striking both posts from a free-kick before creating another opening for Mateta, only for Batalla to deny him with a sharp save.

Despite late pressure, Palace defended resolutely to secure a historic European triumph and hand Glasner a memorable farewell in his final match in charge.
