President Muhammadu Buhari celebrated the accomplishments of the Nigerian contingent to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The athletes’ victories were described by Buhari as “a fitting parting gift to him.”

The President noted in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, that the 94-member team’s outstanding performances brought smiles to the faces of Nigerians.

Buhari also praised the coaching staff and team officials for their dedication to the growth of sports in the country.

The statement reads: “The President joined millions of other sports loving Nigerians to watch some of the colourful and spectacular moments in the 11-day competition.

“With 35 medals, including 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze harvested already on the late evening of the 10th day of the Games, and more medals likely for the country on the last day, the President thanks the shining stars of Nigeria for competing among the best in the world and displaying the God-given attributes of the real Nigerian- never give up, strive to the end.”
