Ajax’s home Eredivisie match against defending champions Feyenoord was abandoned on Sunday evening after hostile situations broke out at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Angry fans were spotted throwing flares onto the field during the game, while riot police were recorded attacking supporters on horseback outside the stadium after the game was called off.

The police were also spotted using tear gas to disperse protesters outside the Johan Cruyff Arena after Ajax fans became frustrated and vandalised vandalized stadium.

Parts of the Johan Cruyff Arena were alleged to have been ‘destroyed’ during the Sunday night turmoil, with video footage showing fans shattering windows and kicking through doors.

The closely contested derby was called off 11 minutes into the second half on Sunday at the Johan Cruyff Arena, with the visitors leading 3-0.

Ajax, who had only one win this season, are 13th in the league table after losing the league crown to Feyenoord last season.

They conceded all three goals in the first half, which infuriated the fans.

When flares were thrown into the field for the second time after the interval, several of which landed near the goal, the referee called a halt to the game and directed the players down the tunnel.

As fans continued to vent their rage, the club projected the statement ‘Lighting of fireworks is prohibited’ on the big screen at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Ajax fans are unaccustomed to such a terrible record since the club reached the Champions League semi-finals just four years ago and has won three of the last four Eredivisie titles.

This season, however, they have only collected three points once in their first four league matches, defeating Heracles on the first day before gradually deteriorating.

Following that, a 2-2 draw with Excelsior was followed by another stalemate against Fortuna Sittard, which was when discontent with form began to mount.

A 3-1 loss to FC Twente last weekend meant that a terrible start to the season was turning into a bad one, and fans at the stadium voiced their displeasure on Sunday evening.

‘After repeated fireworks on the pitch, De Klassieker has been permanently suspended,’ the Eredivisie said in a statement.
