Canada has many paths for people to get or apply for Canadian citizenship, ranging from birth and family links to permanent residence, adoption, and special provisions.

Citizenship is typically the final stage of the immigration process for immigrants who want to stay permanently in the country, after permanent residency and satisfying the country’s citizenship requirements.

Below are some pathways to Canadian citizenship:

    1. Citizenship by birth

People born in Canada are normally Canadian citizens from birth, with few exceptions.

In most cases, being born on Canadian territory can lead directly to citizenship, regardless of the parents’ country or immigration status.

    2. Citizenship by descent

Individuals born outside of Canada who have a Canadian parent and meet citizenship-by-descent rules may already be Canadian citizens. In December 2025, Canada updated its citizenship-by-descent rules to expand and clarify eligibility for those born abroad to Canadian parents.

    3. Citizenship for permanent-resident minors

Children under 18 who are permanent residents can also apply for Canadian citizenship. The qualifications vary on the child’s circumstances, including whether they have a Canadian parent or whether their parent is seeking citizenship at the same time.

    4. Citizenship through naturalization

Naturalization is the primary means by which permanent residents become Canadian citizens.

In general, applicants must have permanent residence status and have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the previous five years.

Applicants must also meet other conditions, such as submitting income taxes when necessary, demonstrating language competence for applicants under the applicable age limit, passing the citizenship test, and taking the citizenship oath.

    5. Citizenship through adoption.

A person born outside Canada and adopted by a Canadian citizen may be eligible for Canadian citizenship under the direct grant process for adopted people.

The adoption must meet the standards of Canadian citizenship law, and extra conditions may apply based on the circumstances.

    6. Citizenship after immigrating via adoption

An adopted child might also apply to become a permanent resident of Canada first.

If the child meets the necessary conditions after becoming a permanent resident, he or she may be eligible for citizenship through the usual citizenship process.

    7. Citizenship for some stateless persons.

Canada also offers a special citizenship grant to those who were born outside the nation to Canadian parents but have lived their entire lives stateless.

Applicants must meet particular criteria, including age and physical presence in Canada.

However, permanent residence remains important for many immigrants.

For most immigrants who are not already Canadian citizens by birth, descent, or another special provision, obtaining permanent residency is a critical step toward citizenship.

A permanent resident may petition for citizenship after completing the required physical presence time and meeting other eligibility requirements.

The Canadian government encourages that potential applicants verify the exact requirements that apply to their circumstances before submitting an application, as citizenship regulations might differ based on how a person obtained or may qualify for Canadian citizenship.
