A bus carrying schoolchildren returning from a trip skidded off the road in Uganda, killing 20 children and one adult, authorities said Friday.
The East African country has a horrible road safety record, with numerous bus and truck accidents on poorly maintained routes.
According to preliminary police investigations, the bus from King David Junior School in the capital, Kampala, drove off the road while returning from a school excursion to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District.
“The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck a large stone along the roadside, and overturned,” police said in a statement on X.
“The crash claimed the lives of one adult male and 20 pupils, while three adult males and several juveniles sustained injuries,” it added.
Police released an image of a highly twisted and overturned bus and said investigations were ongoing, with several children and adults being treated in hospitals.
Fatal bus accidents are rather prevalent in Uganda. In October, two buses crashed on a busy roadway, killing at least 46 people.
