Bruno Fernandes has been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Men’s Footballer of the Year after a standout individual season in England.
According to BBC Sport on Friday, the Portuguese midfielder was recognized for his consistency, creativity, and leadership during the campaign, during which he delivered impressive stats for United despite varied results.
Fernandes scored eight goals and provided 20 assists in 34 games across all competitions, contributing significantly to Manchester United’s improved performance under interim manager Michael Carrick.
The FWA complimented his influence and overall effort as United aimed for a solid league finish and qualification to next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Fernandes becomes the first Manchester United player to receive the accolade since Wayne Rooney in 2010, emphasizing the importance of his accomplishment.
He joined United from Sporting CP in January 2020 for £67.7 million and just reached the 300-game mark for the club, establishing his place as one of the team’s most important players in recent years.
Despite prior speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford, including claimed interest from Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, Fernandes elected to stay and oversee the team.
His current deal runs until 2027, with an option for another year, and his performance this season is expected to spark further talks about a possible extension.
Fernandes has previously claimed that he will only examine his long-term future after the 2026 World Cup and that he will remain focused on his club and national team achievements.
