The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, was removed by the Supreme Court on Friday as the leader of the party.

In a unanimous verdict, a five-member Supreme Court bench overturned the Court of Appeal in Abuja’s recognition of Abure as the party’s national chairman.

The Supreme Court ruled that the appellate court lacked authority to make such a pronouncement because the substance of the matter involved the party’s internal leadership.

The court stressed that issues concerning party leadership are internal problems over which the judiciary has no authority.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court remarked that Senator Esther Usman’s and another’s appeals were granted since they were determined to be meritorious.

The court further noted that, according to the representations before it, his tenure had already expired. As a result, it dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the Abure group of the Labour Party.
