Barcelona extended their lead to seven points at the summit of La Liga following late goals from Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski against Espanyol.

Hansi Flick’s team experienced frustration until just four minutes remain when Fermin Lopez assisted his fellow substitutes in scoring the vital goals.

Initially, he passed to Olmo, who curled an excellent shot into the upper corner, and then more impressive play by Lopez on the right set up Lewandowski for a charming finish from close range in the 90th minute.

Barcelona has netted 12 goals in the final 15 minutes of the second half, surpassing all other teams in La Liga this season.

In an exciting Catalan derby, the home team began quickly with ex-Blackburn Rovers striker Tyrhys Dolan having a shot denied after four minutes.

Visiting goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who previously played for Espanyol, returned to challenge his old club, with the 24-year-old – having departed from Espanyol last summer following nine years – executing several crucial saves.

His substitute, Marko Dmitrovic, executed an important save in the 72nd minute, preventing Eric Garcia’s close-range attempt, and a tie seemed probable until Barcelona’s late dominance yielded results.

Real Madrid, in second place, can narrow the lead at the top to four points by winning at home against Real Betis on Sunday (15:15 GMT).

Espanyol, whose most recent league victory against their rivals was in 2009, continues to hold the fifth position.
