Pope Francis in his homily on Sunday highlighted victims of the mpox virus and called on governments and the pharmaceutical industry to do more to get vaccines to the worst-hit countries. “I pray for all the infected people, in particular the population of the Democratic Republic of Congo, so affected. The Conversation Africa’s regional editor and investigative journalist Adejuwon Soyinka, has been released by the Department of State Service, DSS. On Sunday, the Department of State Services arrested Soyinka at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State. One of Soyinka’s friends sent a distress message to The Punch, stating that he was pulled up shortly after landing from the UK. According to the message, there was no explanation offered for Soyinka’s detention, and he was held incommunicado. Nollywood actress, filmmaker, and producer, Sharon Okpamen, has reportedly died, a month after welcoming her second child. Her death was announced by popular movie producer Stanley Ontop in a statement on his Instagram page. According to reports, the actress went into coma shortly after giving birth to her second child last month. The actress who starred in various movies like ‘The Hidden Secret,’ Ovibieze, died on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Mr. David Ubaha, a lone protester in Akwa Ibom State, has lamented the country’s high living costs, claiming that things are only getting worse following the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstration.  Ubaha, a 41-year-old farmer from the state’s Itu Local Government Area, staged a lone protest in Uyo, the state capital, prior to the #EndBadGovernance protest, in which he lamented the country’s economic hardship as a result of President Bola Tinubu’s removal of oil subsidies. Ahmed Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA ,resigned on Saturday evening, citing personal and family difficulties.  Abubakar stated this after submitting his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on Saturday evening. The Nigerian Police Force confirmed on Saturday the release of 20 medical students kidnapped along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu Road in Benue state. Bandits kidnapped the students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos as they were on their way to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students’ annual conference.
