The immediate past governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has explained why he and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori joined the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples Democratic Party. Speaking during a ceremony conducted at the Cenotaph in Asaba on Monday, where they were formally admitted into the APC, Okowa said the decision was taken in the best interest of Delta State and its people. “People wondered why, but one thing is very important: in the history of a people there is always a time to change their path for the common good of the people, and whatever decision we took…
The immediate governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress is based on the need to build a platform free from godfatherism and internal dysfunction. El-Rufai, who made the remarks while responding to questions from newsmen in Kano on Monday, mentioned that Nigeria needs a credible political alternative to rescue it from its current existential threats. “These anomalies (godfatherism and internal dysfunction) destroyed the All Progressives Congress and the People’s Democratic Party,” he said. El-Rufai said he was in the ancient city of Kano to visit the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu…
The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme ruled on Monday, dismissing Nwachukwu’s no-case submission. The court convicted him of culpable homicide in connection with his wife’s death on April 8, 2022. On June 3, 2022, Nwachukwu was arraigned on a 23-count charge issued by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation. Culpable homicide, spouse abuse, child abuse, and criminal intimidation were among the charges. The prosecution presented 25 exhibits and called 17 witnesses, including…
No fewer than twenty-five people were arrested in police raids across France on Monday, following a series of coordinated prison attacks that shook the government earlier this month, according to a source familiar with the case. According to AFP, the early morning arrests occurred outside of Paris, as well as in Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux. This month, unidentified assailants targeted multiple jails and other facilities around France, torching cars, spraying the entryway of one prison with automatic gunfire, and leaving enigmatic inscriptions. The assaults have embarrassed the right-wing government, whose tough-talking justice and interior ministers, Gérald Darmanin and Bruno Retailleau,…
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has criticised the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, over comments he made about Nigeria during a recent appearance at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. In a statement on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu accused Obi of making “disparaging comments” about Nigeria, claiming that prominent Nigerians visiting overseas should promote the country’s image rather than “de-market” it. The governor said, “He made the unflattering remarks not just about the incumbent Nigerian government but also about Nigeria. “I also find Mr Obi’s pattern of behaviour disturbing. When prominent Nigerians go overseas, they…
Emotional scenes erupted at the India-Pakistan border this weekend, as families were unexpectedly separated following India’s instruction for practically all Pakistani citizens to leave the country, according to The New York Times on Monday. The ban, issued in response to a recent terrorist assault in Kashmir, which India blames on Pakistan, has upended the lives of families with cross-border relationships. As the deportation deadline passed, families flocked to Punjab’s Attari-Wagah border crossing, hoping for a respite, according to The New York Times. Many had been to India for weddings, funerals, or long-awaited reunions. With most visas cancelled, only individuals with…

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday told the opposition parties in the country to lick their wounds and stop blaming him for their alleged gross incompetence in managing the internal affairs of their party. Tinubu also said politicians changing party affiliation is not new or peculiar to Nigeria, pointing out that in more advanced democracies, there are ready examples of notable politicians, statesmen and women who changed their parties. He went on to say that the charges that the administration is leaning towards authoritarianism are untrue and overstated and that the country’s democracy is not in any way threatened. The President,…
Pep Guardiola has stated that winning the FA Cup will not be enough to salvage Manchester City’s disastrous season, despite reaching the final on the same day Liverpool lost their reign as Premier League champions. Guardiola’s side had been crowned English champions for the previous four seasons, but their poor form for much of this season gave Liverpool the opportunity to win a record-equalling 20th top-flight title. Liverpool’s crowning achievement was secured with a 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham, which ended nearly exactly when the full-time whistle blew at Wembley Stadium, signalling City’s 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest in the FA…
The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has issued a sarcastic and satirical apology to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, reigniting discussions about gender dynamics and power struggles within Nigeria’s legislative chambers. In a letter dripping with biting sarcasm, Natasha gave what could be termed as a profuse “apology” for the “grievous crime” of retaining dignity and self-respect in front of the Senate President. She mocked expectations of obedience, stating, “How remiss of me not to understand that my refusal to indulge your…’requests’ was not merely a personal choice but a constitutional violation of certain men’s entitlement.” Speaking on systemic sexism,…
