The Supreme Court of Nigeria has brought final closure to the long-running dispute over the merger between Providus Bank Limited and Unity Bank Plc, dismissing an appeal that sought to halt the transaction and formally endorsing the consolidation. A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Tijani Abubakar, ruled that the appeal lacked merit and ordered the appellants to pay costs of N10 million to each respondent. Beyond rejecting the challenge, the court took the unusual step of invoking its powers under Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act to directly sanction the merger, effectively clearing all remaining…
Scotland, Liverpool and Celtic great Sir Kenny Dalglish is undergoing treatment for cancer. The former forward and manager wanted to keep the news private but confirmed the diagnosis after accidentally sharing the news initially in an “inadvertent social media post”. “I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer,” Dalglish, 75, wrote on social media. “Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well. “Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand. “Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it…
A clinical trial has delivered encouraging results for pancreatic cancer patients after a new pill was found to significantly extend survival among people with advanced forms of the disease. The drug, daraxonrasib, was used in a trial involving 500 patients across North America, Europe, and Asia. A total of 248 patients were given daraxonrasib, while 252 received chemotherapy. The trial results showed that patients treated with daraxonrasib survived for an average of 13.2 months, compared with 6.6 months for those who received chemotherapy. The drug also caused fewer side effects. The drug, taken once daily, works by blocking a mutated…
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has refuted claims circulating in some quarters regarding the political stance of its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, his alleged involvement in calling off a planned protest, and accusations that he has remained silent on issues affecting Nigeria. In a statement released on Tuesday on the RCCG Official Public Relations X handle, the Church clarified that Pastor Adeboye has consistently encouraged RCCG members to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate in the electoral process by voting for candidates of their choice. According to the Church, Pastor Adeboye has maintained a neutral…
The abduction of more than 276 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, on the night of 14 April 2014 marked a turning point in Nigeria’s security crisis. It triggered global outrage and the emergence of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, while exposing the vulnerability of schools to terrorists. Since then, thousands of students have been abducted across Nigeria in a pattern that has spread from insurgency-affected regions to wider banditry hotspots. The incidents have reshaped public concern around education safety, especially in boarding schools. This timeline documents major school attacks and student kidnappings in Nigeria from 2014 to the present. February…
Thousands of Africans applying for US visas are expected to face higher travel costs and longer processing times after the United States moves to consolidate its visa services across the continent. Under the new arrangement, nearly 50 US diplomatic missions currently involved in visa processing in Africa will be reduced to 20 designated hubs in the coming weeks. The restructuring is part of wider immigration measures linked to the administration of President Donald Trump, aimed at tightening visa controls and improving oversight of applications. Applicants in countries without a designated processing centre may now be required to travel to another…
The Federal Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to immediately stop placing civil servants on the widely practised mandatory three-month pre-retirement leave, declaring that the arrangement has no legal backing under the Public Service Rules (PSR). The directive was issued in a circular signed by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, and sent to ministers, permanent secretaries, service chiefs, heads of agencies and other senior public sector officials. In the circular titled “Correct Interpretation of Public Service Rule 120243 on Pre-Retirement Activities,” Walson-Jack said several MDAs had wrongly treated the three-month retirement…
Residents of Borno State have criticised the Federal Government over what they describe as a lack of urgency in responding to the abduction of dozens of schoolchildren in the state. The residents expressed concern over the government’s silence since the kidnapping of 48 primary and junior secondary school pupils from Mussa community in Askira Uba Local Government Area, arguing that the response has fallen short compared to actions taken following a similar incident in Oyo State. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Chairman of the Civil Society Organisations in Borno State, Abubakar Suleiman, said the Federal Government appeared to be treating…
Residents of Ogbomoso in Oyo State staged a protest on Monday, calling for the swift rescue of schoolchildren and teachers kidnapped on May 15. The demonstration came after an earlier mass protest in Ibadan, the state capital, over the continued captivity of the victims. An elderly woman, who said her children were among those kidnapped, led a group of youths in a protest in Ogbomoso. The visibly distraught woman, wearing a pink hijab, broke down in tears as she pleaded for the release of the victims. “Please, have mercy on me. The children have a bright future. Government, please help…

![Is Anthony Odiong still a priest after life in prison sentence over rape? Rev. Fr. Anthony Odiong, a US-based Nigerian Louisiana Catholic priest, was arrested in Florida on Tuesday for possessing child pornography, according to law authorities. The suspect is reportedly accused of many other cases of sexual assault. The Waco, Texas, Police Department announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday that officers detained Father Anthony Odiong in Ave Maria, Florida, with assistance from the United States Marshals Service. Waco police announced in March that they had received "credible information" about a sexual assault allegedly committed by Odiong in Texas in 2012. “During the subsequent investigation, a case of possession of child pornography was uncovered,” the police said. The priest was apprehended in Florida by the Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force. The Waco Police Department said that he will be extradited to Texas. Odiong had previously served in the Archdiocese of New Orleans before being removed as priest in December of last year due to controversy over homilies in which he claimed, among other things, that the Catholic Church was being taken over by "the gays." At the time, the priest was also accused of abusive behaviour; a Louisiana lady claimed in U.S. bankruptcy court that Odiong had committed both financial and sexual abuse against her. Prior to joining the New Orleans Archdiocese, Odiong served in at least two Texas parishes. On Tuesday, Waco police stated that during their sexual assault investigation, "the presence of other survivors was revealed." “Multiple women have come forward to tell similar experiences as the sexual assault survivor who reported the initial allegation,” the police department said. “Survivors’ experiences ranged from sexual assault and indecent assault, more commonly recognised as groping, and financial abuse, with some survivors experiencing every element of Anthony Odiong’s manipulation.” The police said they “believe there may be more survivors, and we wish to speak with anyone who [has] had similar encounters” with the priest. The Archdiocese of New Orleans issued a brief news release on Tuesday noting Odiong's arrest in Florida. The archdiocese “encourages anyone with any information to contact law enforcement,” the release said.](https://chronicle.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/ezgif-6-4730550ede-300x200.jpg)
