The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old woman, identified as Anulika Onyeanusia, over an alleged child pornography case in Onitsha.
The arrest followed open-source intelligence gathered by the police after a video allegedly showing a woman sexually abusing a minor began trending online.
Police spokesperson in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to Ikenga, the operation also led to the rescue of four children aged two, three, six and nine.
Police said sex toys and other items considered relevant to the investigation were recovered from the scene.
“The suspect is currently in police custody as the command intensifies its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence and the possible involvement of other persons,” the statement said.
The suspect’s husband is also being interrogated to establish whether he had any connection with the alleged offence.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Nnanna Oji Ama, described the alleged abuse as unacceptable, particularly because it involves the exploitation of children.
He ordered a thorough investigation and directed that the rescued children receive appropriate care and protection.
The command said it would work with child-protection agencies and other relevant organisations to provide the children with counselling and other necessary support.
Police also assured that the identities and privacy of the children would be protected throughout the investigation.
The command commended vigilantes, bloggers and residents whose information contributed to the investigation and the subsequent arrest.
The police said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the alleged offence and whether other individuals were involved.
