A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a fake spiritualist, Odigie Moses, to one year in prison after he defrauded an Indian woman seeking spiritual healing and later blackmailed her with a secretly recorded nude video.
Justice C.N. Nwabulu convicted Moses on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge bordering on cheating and impersonation as a spiritualist.
The case was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
How the Sextortion Scheme Happened
According to the EFCC, Moses operated a fictitious TikTok account where he posed as a spiritual leader known as “Dr Solomon”.
He obtained $1,100 from an Indian woman, Sharon Kaur, who had approached him for spiritual prayers and assistance.
Moses was later arrested in Ekpoma, Edo State. The EFCC said he received the money through his Zelle payment platform, after which the naira equivalent was paid into his local bank account.
The scheme allegedly escalated when Moses deceived Kaur into undergoing a naked spiritual bath, which he recorded live without her consent.
He then threatened to make the video public unless she paid him money.
The EFCC said its investigation established that the victim eventually paid another $1,100 to persuade Moses not to release the footage of her nudity.
Court Convicts Fake Spiritualist
The charge stated that Moses fraudulently impersonated a spiritual leader on a fictitious TikTok account and obtained $1,100 from Kaur under the guise of providing spiritual prayers and assistance.
The offence was said to contravene Section 321 of the Penal Code Act (Abuja), Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990, and is punishable under Section 322 of the same law.
Moses pleaded guilty to the charge.
Following his plea, EFCC prosecution counsel, Maryam Hayatudeen, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Justice Nwabulu subsequently sentenced Moses to one year imprisonment, with an option of a ₦300,000 fine.
The judge also ordered that the $1,100 proceeds of crime be forfeited to the victim through the EFCC.
