The Nigerian Police Force on Saturday dismissed reports in some sections of the media that Abuja, Nigeria’s capital is saturated with explosive bombs. A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the report was fake and urged Nigerians to disregard it. “It is surprising and disheartening to read in the news and on social media that bombs are being planted in every area of the FCT. “It is unfortunate that the report is even coming from some individuals who are presumed to be peace ambassadors and patriotic agents of national unity. “I don’t think it will…
Lionel Messi grabbed a goal and an assist to inspire Paris St Germain to a 4-3 comeback victory over Troyes on Saturday as they restored their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to five points. The result moved unbeaten PSG to 35 from 13 games ahead of second-placed Lens who beat Toulouse 3-0 on Friday. Mama Balde had given mid-table Troyes the lead twice before Messi assumed control to score his seventh Ligue 1 goal of the season and take his tally of assists to 10 — a league high. PSG started slowly and Troyes needed just three minutes…
Crysencio Summerville scored a dramatic late winner as Leeds stunned Liverpool to damage the Reds’ top-four hopes and move out of the Premier League relegation zone. The hosts had lost to bottom-of-the-table Nottingham Forest in their last league outing but were hoping to build on their dominant 3-0 win at Ajax in the Champions League in midweek. However, they made the worst possible start against a Leeds side who started the day in the bottom three when a poor back pass by Joe Gomez was pounced on by Rodrigo, who poked into an empty net. Liverpool responded well and equalised…
Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson netted twice and Miguel Almiron scored a sensational second-half strike as the fourth-placed Magpies thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday. Newcastle had a couple of early chances against a Villa side that thrashed Brentford 4-0 last week after sacking manager Steven Gerrard but the joy of that result was quickly forgotten. The visitors’ afternoon got off to a bad start when goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was struck in the head by team mate Tyrone Mings’ knee in the 18th minute and had to be replaced by Robin Olsen…
Graham Potter’s return to Brighton turned into a nightmare when he suffered his first defeat since taking charge of Chelsea in a 4-1 loss in the Premier League on Saturday. Potter left Brighton to succeed outgoing coach Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea last month, returning to the south coast to face his former employers for the first time complete with a nine-match unbeaten record in all competitions at his new club. But the hosts made a blistering start at the Amex Stadium against Potter’s bewildered side, racing into the lead inside five minutes through a well-taken Leandro Trossard goal. Breathless Brighton…
Bayern Munich demolished visitors Mainz 05 6-2 on Saturday, with Sadio Mane scoring once and setting up two more goals, to take over the lead in the Bundesliga. Senegal international Mane, who scored in Bayern’s 3-0 midweek win at Barcelona in the Champions League, also missed a penalty. Germany international Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Leon Goretzka were also on target for Bayern along with substitute Mathys Tel and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Mainz cut the deficit twice, with goals from Silvan Widmer and Marcus Ingvartsen, after also missing a penalty. The champions went two points clear at the top of…
A man who clubbed US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband over the head with a hammer, shouting, “Where is Nancy?”, faced charges of attempted murder and other felonies a day after the violent break-in at the couple’s San Francisco home. Police initially declined to offer a motive for Friday’s attack on Paul Pelosi, 82, who according to his wife’s office underwent surgery for a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hands, though doctors expect a full recovery. But the assault stoked fears about political violence less than two weeks ahead of midterm elections on Nov. 8 that…
A stunning free kick from Kevin De Bruyne earned Manchester City a 1-0 victory at Leicester City on Saturday, a win that moved the champions back to the top of the Premier League. With top goalscorer Erling Haaland missing a Premier League game for the first time since arriving at City through injury, the visitors lacked a cutting edge in the first half, with Leicester containing them with ease. It was clear it would take something special to unlock the determined hosts, with Belgian midfielder De Bruyne stepping up, firing an unstoppable free kick into the net four minutes after…
