A man and his son lost their lives after being burnt to death in an auto crash at Sabon Barki, in the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, while three other people sustained injuries.
The crash happened at about 4:20pm on Sunday and involved a commercial tricycle, commonly known as Keke NAPEP, which was carrying a family returning from church service.
An eyewitness, Kefas Gyang, who confirmed the incident on Sunday, said the tricycle caught fire after another vehicle hit it.
He said the man’s wife sustained a broken leg, while two of their children and the tricycle rider were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“I was passing by on my way from work when I saw people crying. I went closer to find out what had happened and saw people trying to rescue the victims,” Gyang said.
“But the fire was too much for us to handle. It was beyond our strength, and we could not do much to rescue them from the burning tricycle.”
Gyang made it clear that he did not witness the actual collision, saying he arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.
“When the other vehicle hit the Keke, I was not there. I only came across the scene afterwards and saw people crying,” he added.
The eyewitness went on to claim that the driver of the other vehicle ran away from the scene following the crash.
As of press time, attempts to contact Peter Longsan, the Plateau State Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, for a comment on the incident had not succeeded.
