A British man has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison over his attempt to grab a gun in a bid to kill Donald Trump. Michael Sandford, 20, pleaded guilty in September to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function. He was accused of grabbing a policeman’s gun at a rally in Las Vegas in order to shoot at the candidate. His mother says “he is remorseful over what he did”. Sandford, of Dorking, Surrey, had faced up to 10 years in prison over the alleged assassination plot. The court…
Bournemouth moved to the highest league position in their history as Leicester’s miserable run away from home continued with defeat at Vitality Stadium. The champions paid for a lacklustre first half, where they created clear openings for Jamie Vardy and Robert Huth, but surrendered the ball all too easily. Eddie Howe’s side saw 70% of the ball before the break and Marc Pugh scored for the hosts on his first league start of the season with a controlled drive from 18 yards out. Leicester improved but ran into a stubborn home defence and goalkeeper Artur Boruc produced a key save…
Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as Everton came from behind to secure a first victory since October. The Gunners, who had won their previous three games, were rewarded for an impressive start as Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick deflected in off Ashley Williams. Everton equalised just before half-time when Seamus Coleman glanced home Leighton Baines’ excellent cross. The Toffees, encouraged by a vocal crowd, dominated thereafter and Williams powered home a late header to complete the turnaround. Home captain Phil Jagielka was sent off in the dying minutes for a second bookable offence and Arsenal had…

Visiting West African leaders have met Mr Jammeh to try to persuade him to step down after 22 years in power. “We hope and pray that he [Jammeh] accepts their advice and leaves office,” Mr Njai said. A senior official…

Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom state government says only 23 people died in a collapsed church, an apparent attempt to cover up the true toll when the metal girders and corrugated iron roof crashed onto a crowded service over the weekend. The Associated Press reported at least 160 people died, using the number of bodies counted at one mortuary by the director of the biggest hospital in the state, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Hospital director Etete Peters said mortuaries were overwhelmed by Saturday’s tragedy. But Peters later told journalists that only 24 bodies were at the hospital’s morgue. Reigners Bible Church…
A sprawling building harbouring foodstuff shops within Cable Point Quarters, popularly called “Cable Point Market” in Asaba, Delta State, was yesterday razed by fire outbreak suspected to be due to electrical fault. Eyewitness, Iyabo Mushin, said the fire which gutted the entrance to the building, started around 2am, and it was neighbouring house owners who alerted the authorities to it. It was gathered that three persons who attempted to put out the fire sustained various degrees of injuries, as the fire was beyond what they could tackle. Residents said they have been taken to a private hospital where they are…
