The Lagos State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy on Thursday handed over an order to the Nigerian Prisons Service for the immediate release of 18 inmates serving life sentences at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison. The order was handed over to the Service through the State’s Controller of Prisons, Mr Olatunbosun Ladipo. The 18 inmates, who included 15 male and 3 females serving life sentences for various offences, and having spent more than 30 years in incarceration, were recommended for immediate release by the Council on compassionate grounds. The Federal Government has approved the establishment of Mines Police Division to checkmate illegal mining and exportation of raw minerals through the borders and sea ports. Mr Olayinka Oyebode, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that the division was recently approved by Inspector-General of Police (IGP). An overwhelming rainstorm that occurred in Niger State between Tuesday and Wednesday has reportedly killed no fewer than seven persons. Among the seven reportedly killed was Abdulmumuni Mohammed, who was the village head of Masama in Duma District of Borgu Local Government Area of the state. On the 22nd of February 2017, a Four-man armed robbery gang stormed and attacked a Zenith Bank in Owerri, Wetheral Road, Imo State, which left about 3 police men and five bank customers injured, and the one of the armed robbers dead.
