Nigerian troops in Borno have killed five Boko Haram insurgents and captured a top commander of the group in the ongoing operation in Sambisa Forest and the Lake Chad basin. Colonel Onyeama Nwachukwu, Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of Operation Lafiya Dole, in a statement in Maiduguri, said troops also rescued three civilians, recovered vehicles and high calibre ammunition in various operations in the past two days. Nwachukwu said on Thursday, the troops engaged and neutralised a number of fleeing insurgents while attempting to escape the military blocking position in one of the cleared enclaves ‘Sabil-Huda’, deep in Sambisa Forest.…
Glenn Murray scored twice to help Brighton & Hove Albion to a comfortable win as they eased their relegation worries – and increased Swansea’s. Murray opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he was clumsily fouled by Mike van der Hoorn, before combining with Jose Izquierdo for his second. Anthony Knockaert, who had earlier had a goal ruled out for offside against Murray, added a third after a neat exchange with Pascal Gross. Late on, Swansea got one back when Tammy Abraham’s effort deflected off the unfortunate Lewis Dunk for his fourth own goal of the season, before Jurgen…
Mohamed Salah scored for the sixth successive game as Liverpool moved above Manchester United into second place in the Premier League with an entertaining win over West Ham. Emre Can headed Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead from a corner – the Reds’ 100th goal this season – after Salah had earlier been denied by a post. Salah made it 2-0 to the hosts with an instinctive, low finish after a delicious pass by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, before Roberto Firmino added the third after a mistake by goalkeeper Adrian. Michail Antonio’s quality, low finish gave West Ham hope – but Mane, who had…
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Saturday advised state governors who could not address workers’ problems to resign. The TUC President, Mr Bobboi Kaigama, said in Lagos that workers could no longer vouch for state governments that non-payment of salaries was as a result of lack of funds. He said that the non-payment could be due to corruption. Kaigama made the TUC’s views known while addressing journalists after the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. He said that it was only the Lagos State Government that had been regularly paying workers’ salaries and allowances. “All the other states…
Jack Butland’s calamitous error against Leicester cost Stoke two points in their fight against Premier League relegation. The Potters had led through Xherdan Shaqiri’s first-half strike and looked comfortable in containing their hosts – up until the 70th minute when the England goalkeeper experienced a moment to forget. Marc Albrighton surged down the right and fired in a low cross intended for Jamie Vardy at the near post. However, the ball flew past the striker, and his marker Moritz Bauer, bounced off the chest of Butland and into the net. READ: Pep Guardiola charged for wearing yellow ribbon He went…
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says 21 members of staff have left their jobs for sexual misconduct in the last three years. The ICRC’s director-general, Yves Daccord, said the individuals had paid for “sexual services” and had resigned or were dismissed from the aid agency. Mr Daccord added that it was “a difficult but important day”. The revelations come as the aid sector has been hit by numerous allegations of sex abuse and exploitation by workers. Mr Daccord said that it was the recent reports of sexual misconduct from humanitarian agencies that had spurred the Geneva-based ICRC…

She’s been described as “the African Mona Lisa”, the subject of a long-lost series of three paintings by the artist considered the father of Nigerian modernism. One of the missing works, which was discovered in a north London flat, goes on sale in the British capital on Wednesday and is expected to fetch 250,000 pounds ($347,000, 282,000 euros).
