The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 22 packages of suspected cocaine worth about N1 billion along the Badagry–Seme corridor.

The seizure, conducted by the NCS Seme Area Command, was formally handed over on Friday at the Federal Operations Unit Zone A to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Adewale Adeniyi, comptroller-general of customs, represented by Timi Bomodi, deputy comptroller-general in charge of enforcement, investigation, and inspection, said the interception took place in the early hours of February 10 at 3:00am.

Bomodi explained: “Our officers intercepted a Toyota Highlander carrying 22 packages suspected to be cocaine. The drugs were hidden in a special bunker under the vehicle’s axle—so expertly concealed that detection would have been virtually impossible without our officers’ vigilance.”

One suspect was arrested during the operation led by Wale Adenuga of the Seme Area Command. Bomodi emphasised that the seizure reflects the NCS’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and combating narcotics.

Customs authorities said the interception was conducted under the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, empowering the agency to enforce prohibitions related to public health and national security.

Receiving the drugs on behalf of the NDLEA, Abubakar Wali, assistant commander-general of the Lagos Strategic Command, praised the collaboration between the agencies. “This handover highlights the effectiveness of the MOU between NDLEA and NCS and the critical role of inter-agency cooperation in curbing cross-border drug trafficking,” he said.
