The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern about some reported cases of violence in the Saturday governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi governorship elections. In a statement issued by Mr Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee in Abuja, INEC said that it was unfortunate there were violence in spite all efforts to ensure peaceful elections. Governor Yahaya Bello is leading in the early results declared at some polling units in the Kogi election, amidst accusations and counter accusations of polling violence and shooting at collation centres. One of the victories the incumbent would cherish is narrowly defeating his trenchant critic and opponent Barrister Natasha Akpoti in her polling unit. The Nigerian Army troops deployed at Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno has subdued Boko Haram terrorists and rescued an Octogenarian, three women and four children held captives by the insurgents. The Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) “to investigate whether the persistent crimes of corruption, violence, and killings during elections in Nigeria, most recently in Bayelsa and Kogi states, and the repeated failure of the Nigerian authorities to address the crimes amount to violence against Nigerians and crimes against humanity within the jurisdiction of the ICC.” The petition dated 16 November, 2019 was sent to Mrs. Fatou Bensouda, Prosecutor, ICC. An Appeal Court sitting in Owerri on Saturday sacked Obinna Onwubuariri, the member representing Isiala Mbano/Onuimo/Okigwe Federal constituency of Imo in the House of representatives. The chairman of the panel, Justice R.N Pemu, who read the judgment, said that the election that brought Onwubuariri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to power in Feb. 23 was not in tandem with the electoral act of 2010, as amended.
