Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday, expressed sorrow over the death of 22 members of the Kano State contingent to the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

This was said in his condolence message to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and the families of the deceased. The Senate President represented President Bola Tinubu at the games’ closing ceremony in Abeokuta on Friday.

Akpabio, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, called the occurrence a “devastating loss” and a sobering reminder of the need to prioritise the safety and welfare of Nigerian youth.

“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of 22 members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

“This devastating loss is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritising the safety and well-being of our citizens, particularly our youth. We stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and pray for their swift healing and comfort during this difficult time,” he said.

Akpabio also prayed for the souls of the departed to rest in peace, adding that their memories should inspire a collective commitment to a safer Nigeria.

The 21 victims were reportedly members of the state delegation returning from the yearly sports festival when disaster struck.

The full extent of the incident has yet to be officially disclosed.

The National Sports Festival, which attracts athletes from all around Nigeria, serves as a venue for fostering unity and discovering talent.

The tragedy has overshadowed what was supposed to be a celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and national pride.
