Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Boxing Day, donated 10 outboard engine fishing boats to women and cooperative groups from Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District as part of his constituency projects.

The presentation took place at his country residence in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

His media team confirmed this in a statement made in Abuja on Saturday.

The beneficiaries came from riverine settlements in the state, where fishing is the primary source of income.

Dr (Mrs) Ekaette Akpabio, the Senate President’s wife, spoke at the ceremony and complimented her husband for remembering ladies from Akwa Ibom State’s riverine communities.

She explained that the recipients were chosen from the Eket Senatorial District, emphasizing that Akpabio, as Senate President, represents all Nigerians, regardless of senatorial district.

In his remarks, Akpabio thanked the women for their ongoing support, stating that he chose to empower them because of the great support he has always received from women in the state.

He said, “I can never forget your love; I can never forget your prayers; I can never forget your support. We are still standing strong because you are still praying.

“Let me thank you in advance for the support you will give to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Today I’m making you also fishers of men. The nets will be for you to drag as many votes as possible for the All Progressives Congress, APC, in your Senatorial District.

“The President is very happy with Akwa Ibom State. Governor Umo Eno has made us proud. He is touching lives and making sure that human capital development is a major focus of his administration. Mine is to urge you to support him,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Victor Antai, Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, who organized the presentation, stated that each boat was outfitted with fishing nets, a refrigerator, and extra fuel tanks for the motors.

He stated that the larger boats have two 75-horsepower motors, while the smaller ones have 40-horsepower engines.

Mma Nkoyo Isong, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to Akpabio and his wife for empowering the women to improve their livelihoods.

She stated that the generosity would be reciprocated with continuous support for the Senate President and his party in subsequent elections.

Only a few of the boats were brought out for symbolic display, while Akpabio announced the names of individual recipients and cooperative groups chosen for the project.
