The Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, stated on Monday in Yola that the death toll from Sunday’s flooding has risen to 23, with many others still missing.
Fintiri, who landed at Yola International Airport around 1:45 p.m. on Monday, went immediately to the devastated areas in Yola-South Local Government and expressed sympathies to the victims.
The governor met with displaced families at Yelewa Primary School, offered his condolences, and assured them of the government’s commitment to delivering relief items to alleviate their suffering.
He declared that the state government will immediately form a technical committee, in partnership with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency, to analyse the entire extent of the damage caused by the flood.
“We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment.
“Based on their findings, we will take concrete steps to assist affected residents,” he stated.
While speaking to the victims in the camp, the governor expressed displeasure with those who used the tragedy to promote falsehoods and incite political animosity.
“This is not a time for politics or finger-pointing. It’s a time for unity and action,” he said.
The governor blamed the floods on a combination of heavy rains and some residents’ obstructed water channels, which hindered appropriate rainwater drainage into the river, emphasising that such construction faults must be corrected in the future.
