In what may seem like a turn of events, a 49-year-old man, Abiodun Sokoya, has pleaded with an Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolve his 19-year-old marriage as his wife always got drunk in a public bar.

It is common place to he hear of women complain of their drunken husbands not men complaining of their drunken wives.

Sokoya, an engineer, told the court on Thursday that he was no longer interested in the marriage which had produced four children.

The husband, who lives at Rofo Estate in Odongunyan area of Ikorodu, described his wife was a drunk and a trouble maker.

“My wife visits her friends at a public bar (beer parlour) and she also drinks alcohol.

“I warned her to desist from moving with such friends, but she did not heed my warning.”

According to him, the wife also attends night parties and relates with women who have no husbands; her stubbornness pushed me to marry a second wife.

“She does not bother to check her children in their schools during visiting days; Please separate us, I can no longer live with her,” he said.

His wife, Olabisi, however, denied the allegations and urged the court to save her marriage amid tears.

The Court’s President, Mrs Omolara Abiola, scolded the woman and advised her to change her attitude.

She also asked the couple to keep the peace pending the outcome of the court’s proceedings.

The case was adjourned to March 9 for a possible reconciliation.
