Erling Haaland netted the winner to extend his remarkable goals scoring run against RB Leipzig, as Manchester City got back to winning ways by taking three points in the Champions League.
Enzo Maresca’s team had suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats and only squeezed past Brighton on penalties in the Carabao Cup, but they came away victorious in Germany in a thrilling, end-to-end contest.
The city was finding it hard to break down a stubborn Leipzig defense, and it was the hosts who carved out the better chances in the early stages.
Antonio Nusa’s strike from outside the box nearly crept in through Gianluigi Donnarumma’s grasp but landed on top of the net, while Christoph Baumgartner curled just wide of the far post.
After dominating possession without posing a threat, City were handed a gift by home defender Castello Lukeba, who got his feet in a tangle and ended up sliding Nico O’Reilly’s harmless cross into his own net.
But the visitors repaid the favor at the start of the second half—Donnarumma’s recent form has been questionable, and the Italian left his near post far too open, letting Ridle Baku squeeze in the equalizer.
City regained the lead on 57 minutes with a bullet header from Enzo Fernandez, but it lasted only briefly, as Nusa fired home a superb low finish on the hour to pull Leipzig level once more.
Maresca’s side kept pushing and were rewarded through captain Haaland, who slid in the winner on 78 minutes from Elliot Anderson’s low cross, taking his tally to 13 goals in nine games against Leipzig.
