Chelsea beat Man United to sign Swedish starlet from IFK Gothenburg

Chelsea have completed a deal to sign talented young winger Edwin Andersson from Swedish side IFK Gothenburg despite the transfer window being closed.

The 16-year-old is said to be one of the most promising young talents in the country, and was also being courted by Manchester United, where he had a trial 18 months ago.

But the Blues have swooped to beat the Red Devils to his signature, and Andersson is expected to go straight into the U18 team.

Gothenburg’s academy manager Jonas Olsson said: “We of course wish Edwin good luck. We would have liked to have seen him stay with us but that he is being recruited to Chelsea is a good mark on our business.”

Andersson will join January signing Bryan Fiabema in the academy, with the Blues still yet to sign a senior player since Frank Lampard took charge of the club, despite being linked with a whole host of big names in January.

Lampard appeared far from happy with the lack of business last month, saying: “Some things are not in my control. My first thought as always is what happens on the training pitch. It’s clear that we wanted to bring players in”.

“I certainly wanted to bring players in. I think I’ve made that pretty clear over the last few weeks and it hasn’t happened.”

It has been reported, however, that Lampard will be allowed £150m to spend in the summer, with the likes of Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Moussa Dembele of Lyon top of his wishlist as he looks to bring in a forward.

Chelsea’s advantage in the battle for the fourth Champions League spot was cut to four points at the weekend following their draw with Leicester coupled with Tottenham’s win over Manchester City, and they have three crucial home games in a row coming up after the winter break against United, Spurs and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
