Ten individuals were taken into custody, and a police officer suffered a serious facial injury during the policing operation for Liverpool’s Premier League match against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
As reported by ESPN, the arrests came after a heated meeting that was marked by hostility toward Manchester City regarding their guilty verdict in a case concerning alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, a decision the club has appealed.
Merseyside Police stated that those arrested included one man suspected on two counts of assaulting a police officer, five people suspected of tragedy chanting, one suspected of being drunk and disorderly and assaulting, two suspected of affray, and one suspected of throwing objects onto the pitch.
The injured officer was hurt at around 6.35 pm while supporters were leaving the stadium during the arrest of a man on Anfield Road.
The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin condemned the tragedy, chanting, saying it inflicted severe distress on the families and loved ones of victims and had no place in football.
She added that police would keep working with clubs to identify offenders and bring them to justice, warning that those involved risked arrest and a criminal record.
Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, extending their perfect start to the Premier League season to six straight wins.
The match was goalless at half-time, but Liverpool were down to 10 men after Ryan Gravenberch was shown a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.
Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute before Jeremy Doku doubled City’s lead three minutes later and Rayan Cherki sealed the victory in the 78th minute.
The game was played in a hostile atmosphere, with Liverpool supporters jeering City players and displaying banners protesting the club’s financial breaches verdict.
