A groom has canceled his wedding a day before the main event due to irreconcilable differences with his bride and her family.
The wedding ceremony between Mr. Samuel Isaac Ogbonnaya and Gift Oriaku, scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, was canceled by the groom.
Mr. Samuel Isaac Ogbonnaya announced the cancellation in a public statement shared on Facebook by his brother, informing family members, friends, guests, and members of the public that the wedding would no longer proceed as scheduled.
The statement reads, “I, Mr. Samuel Isaac Ogbonnaya, wish to use this medium to inform the general public that the wedding between myself, Mr. Samuel Isaac Ogbonnaya, and Miss Gift Oriaku slated to be held tomorrow, Saturday, the 19th day of September 2026, has been called off due to irreconcilable developments that just arose.
“I sincerely regret and apologize to everyone for any inconveniences this may have caused, and I appeal that the public should please bear with me even as I implore your continued prayers and support. May God bless everyone.”
While the groom did not explicitly give the reason for the cancelation of the wedding, the brother claimed that the wedding was called off over the bride’s family’s inability to provide “idu-ulo,” an Igbo term used to describe gifts a bride’s family gives her to take to her husband’s house.
A social media user, Promise Umezurike, claimed the wedding was canceled due to the elder brother of the bride seeking the postponement of the wedding due to his inability to buy the “idu-ulo” items for his sister.
Umezurile wrote, “For clarity before you guys start judging us, the cause of cancelling the wedding is that the elder brother of the bride called the groom three days before the wedding and demanded that the wedding be postponed to December.
”A wedding that was just three days away. That the money they want to use and buy things they will use to duo la their sister ulo, he couldn’t afford it, and that he requested for their uncle’s help, but that the uncle said he went to the USA for vacation and so requested that the wedding be postponed because he wanted to be physically present at the wedding.”
He added that the groom “pleaded and told them that it would not be possible to postpone the wedding as it was already too late to do that and given the fact that everything and all the vendors had been paid, but they insisted and the girl supported her family, after every plea fell on deaf ears, my brother said he wasn’t going ahead with both the wedding and the marriage anymore.”
The development has attracted mixed reactions from Nigerians.
”Samuel, a broken relationship is better than a broken marriage,” Happiness Victor wrote.
George Emeka claimed the groom has seen some red flags on the part of the bride, which forced him to call off the wedding.
”Men are no longer smiling anymore. Bro has seen so many red flags and decided to call it off on time,” Emeka wrote.
For Becky Okore, she doubted the love the couple had for each other when she said, ”I don’t think they loved each other. This is something they can resolve between themselves. It shouldn’t have escalated like this. I feel for the girl, who knows what she will be passing through now.”
