US President Donald Trump has stated that he will not get involved in the case of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts woman accused of killing her three young children.
Clancy, 36, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her children: Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan.
Trump revealed his stance on Sunday when he was asked whether he would pardon Clancy, whose lawyer had made a public appeal for him to step in.
“It’s a very sad situation.
“There is no winner there. There is no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead. So, I don’t know. It’s actually a state situation, you know, not a federal one,” Trump said.
Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, appealed to Trump last week to grant his client a pardon, though he recognized that the president lacks the power to pardon a person convicted of a state crime.
Trump remarked that the matter ought to be settled at the state level, and he commended Reddington as a capable lawyer.
“He’s a good attorney. I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney.
“I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out … There is no win there,” Trump said.
Clancy’s defense team has contended that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a serious psychiatric disorder that can lead to a loss of touch with reality following childbirth.
Following the deaths of her children, Clancy tried to take her own life and sustained injuries that left her paralyzed.
Earlier this month, her first trial resulted in a mistrial after the jurors, following a week of deliberations, were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
It was reported that the jury was divided 11-1, with 11 jurors supporting an acquittal because they believed Clancy was not criminally responsible for the killings.
