Activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has declared that his detention will not weaken his determination to continue fighting for justice in Nigeria.
In a post on X shortly after his release from the Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday, Sowore said imprisonment had only strengthened his commitment to his cause.
“Prison has never broken the resolve of those who fight for justice. If anything, it only strengthens our determination. The struggle continues. We will never surrender. #RevolutionNow #Sowore2027,” he wrote.
His release followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which granted him bail in the sum of N200 million.
The court ordered him to provide two sureties, including a traditional ruler from his community and a person who owns landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He was also directed to deposit his international passport with the court registrar pending the conclusion of the trial.
Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the court ordered that Sowore be released to his legal team.
The case stems from charges filed by the Department of State Services, which accused Sowore of making defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu in posts published on X and Facebook. He has pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
Sowore was initially granted bail on self-recognition. However, on June 16, the court revoked his bail and issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing.
The court ruled that the letter submitted to explain his absence did not provide sufficient reasons.
On June 22, the judge ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre while hearing his application challenging the revocation of his bail. The court also dismissed his request that the judge withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
