Sporting Kansas City have extended the contract of Ike Opara and Benny Feilhaber, tying the latter to a new two-year contract on Wednesday.

Feilhaber, 31, is a former member of the US national team and will remain with the club until the 2018 season.

The Brazilian-American midfielder joined Kansas City in 2013 from New England Revolution where he played 52 times and scored five goals.

He has also played for English side Derby County as well as German side Hamburg SV.

Unlike Feilhaber, defender Ike Opara only got a one-year contract extension but the deal includes a team option for the following two seasons.

On the club’s official Twitter page, City said it was excited to keep the duo. “We are so excited to have Ike Opara and Feilhaber back next season! These guys make our community better. #soccerkickscancer.”

Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Opara was drafted in the first round (3rd overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by San Jose Earthquakes.

He made his professional debut on March 27, 2010, in San Jose’s opening game of the 2010 MLS season against Real Salt Lake, and scored his first professional career goal – an away match winner – against Chicago Fire on April 10, 2010.

Opara was traded to Sporting Kansas City from San Jose on December 12, 2012 for Kansas City’s natural second round selection in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
