Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reignited debate over Africa’s economic challenges after endorsing a social media post that questioned whether colonialism is the main reason for the continent’s poverty.

Musk expressed his support on X after responding to a post by user @magattew, who compared the economic trajectories of Ethiopia and Vietnam.

The post argued that Ethiopia, which largely avoided colonial rule throughout its history, remained one of Africa’s poorest nations for many years. By contrast, Vietnam experienced French colonialism and endured decades of war before emerging as one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies.

According to the user, the experiences of both countries challenge the widely held belief that colonialism is the primary explanation for Africa’s economic struggles.

The post stated: “Ethiopia was never colonized. For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent.

“Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity.

“If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true. Can we please retire this excuse?”

Musk signalled his agreement by reposting the message with a brief response: “Yes.”

His endorsement has drawn attention to a long-running debate among economists, historians and policymakers over the factors behind Africa’s development challenges, including governance, institutions, trade, geography, conflict, colonial legacies and economic policy.
