The Lagos State Government has issued a restriction on the transit of products and heavy bags on all regulated public transportation buses in the state.
The enforcement of the directive is set to take effect on June 1, 2026.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) revealed the decision in a statement released on Tuesday by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.
LAMATA stated that the decision is in response to mounting commuter complaints and operational issues caused by the increased usage of regulated buses for moving products and high loads, which it claims has compromised passenger comfort, safety, and efficient service delivery.
According to the statement, the directive was issued following a strategic meeting between LAMATA and the heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies, at which it was unanimously agreed that the practice should be discontinued and reorganized to ensure a balanced and sustainable system that protects commuters while supporting transport operators.
“LAMATA emphasized that the enforcement of the suspension will be strict and uncompromising. Any bus driver found violating the directive by conveying goods during the suspension period will face immediate sack and be blacklisted.
“In addition, any ground staff or LAMATA personnel at terminals or loading points found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses will be summarily dismissed without exception,” the statement read.
LAMATA emphasized that there will be no tolerance for noncompliance and that the government remains dedicated to restoring order, safety, and efficiency to the public transportation system.
It asked travelers, transportation operators, terminal authorities, and members of the public to completely comply with the directive and make alternative arrangements for the passage of cargo.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe, dependable, and commuter-oriented transportation system for Lagos residents.
