The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has issued a strong warning to military personnel, local council officials and private motorists over the illegal use of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes across Lagos.

The agency said offenders would face arrest and prosecution if caught using the dedicated corridors without authorisation.

LAMATA emphasised that only designated BRT buses and vehicles operating under its regulated franchise system are permitted on the lanes. It added that emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks are exempted strictly during emergencies.

Speaking on the development, Kolawole Ojelabi, head of corporate communications at the authority, said there has been a growing abuse of the BRT lanes by unauthorised users, including military and paramilitary personnel, local government vehicles and private motorists.

He described the trend as “deeply concerning”, warning that it undermines the efficiency and safety of the transport system.

According to Ojelabi, the BRT system was designed to provide fast, reliable and safe mass transit for Lagos commuters. However, illegal access to the lanes disrupts operations, contributes to traffic congestion and puts passengers at risk.

    • LASTMA to enforce traffic laws on LAMATA bus operators

He stressed that the regulations governing BRT lane usage remain fully in force and would now be strictly enforced without exception.

“All offenders, regardless of status or affiliation, will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with Lagos traffic laws,” he said.

LAMATA added that penalties for violations could include fines, vehicle impoundment and other legal sanctions.

The authority called for cooperation from all stakeholders, noting that compliance is crucial to maintaining an efficient and world-class transport system in Lagos.
