President Bola Tinubu has celebrated elder statesman and Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti ahead of his 100th birthday on May 11, describing him as a symbol of integrity, service and democratic struggle.
In a congratulatory message released on Sunday, Tinubu praised Pa Fasoranti’s contributions to education, politics and the fight against military rule in Nigeria.
The president said the nonagenarian deserved the tributes being poured on him because of his “uncommon life of service and immense contributions” to the country.
According to Tinubu, Fasoranti distinguished himself through his principles, commitment to noble causes and dedication to national service.
“His life is a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation, and true leadership,” Tinubu said.
The president described Fasoranti as one of the last surviving loyalists of late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo, noting that he was active in the defunct Action Group during the First Republic and later joined the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
Tinubu also recalled Fasoranti’s role as commissioner for finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin.
The president further commended the Afenifere leader for standing against military dictatorship and becoming one of the prominent voices demanding a return to democratic governance.
He noted that Fasoranti later emerged as the recognised leader of pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere following internal divisions after the death of Abraham Adesanya.
Tinubu said Fasoranti survived an assassination attempt during the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha but remained resolute in the pro-democracy struggle.
He also referenced the personal tragedies suffered by the elder statesman, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019.
The president thanked Fasoranti for supporting his presidential ambition and offering prayers that contributed to his victory in the 2023 election.
