Five persons were killed on Sunday night when gunmen ambushed residents in the Fan District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, fueling fresh tension in the area.
Community members stated that the victims were heading home around 9pm when the assailants opened fire without warning.
“Four persons died on the spot, and another later died in the hospital,” said Pam Saidu, a resident of Fan, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday.
The gunmen’s attack was also confirmed by the Berom Youth Moulders Association.
Its press secretary, Rwang Tengwong, branded the killings as “unfortunate and condemnable” and requested security forces to increase protection of lives and property in the council.
He asked for immediate action to prevent future attacks in the neighborhood, which has seen frequent violence in recent months.
Residents say the fresh killings have heightened fear in the region, and many are demanding additional security patrols.
At the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to comment on the attack by the gunmen.
