The Ogun State Government is set to file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, the driver of the stationary truck linked to the fatal road crash involving associates of Anthony Joshua.

The development emerged during court proceedings on Thursday, where state counsel D.O. Ogunyomi took over the prosecution of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his friends at the time of the accident.

Ogunyomi urged the court to consolidate charges against both Adamu and Kayode, arguing that both drivers played roles in the tragic incident. The request followed legal advice from the Ogun State Department of Public Prosecution, which was read in court.

The DPP recommended that Kayode be prosecuted for reckless driving, alongside the truck driver.

Presiding magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun granted the application for consolidation of charges. The case has been adjourned until June 2, 2026.

    Background

The crash occurred on December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma area in Sagamu, Ogun State. The SUV carrying Joshua and his associates collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside while travelling from Lagos.

Joshua survived the accident with minor injuries, but two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives.

Ghami served as Joshua’s longtime strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer.

    The Case So Far

Police had earlier arrested Kayode and filed a four-count charge against him, including dangerous driving causing death and reckless driving.

At a previous hearing on March 17, counsel for the DPP, R.D. Kadiri, told the court that fresh evidence had emerged and would be added to the case.

However, Kayode’s lawyer, Abiodun Olalekan, criticised the prosecution for delays, describing them as “time-wasting tactics”.

With the consolidation now approved, both drivers are expected to face trial as the state moves to establish responsibility for the fatal crash.
