The uncle of Anthony Joshua stated that his nephew wouldn’t want the driver responsible for the deadly crash that took the lives of two of his friends to be imprisoned.

Adeniyi Kayode, 46, was brought before a magistrate’s court in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Tuesday regarding the December 29 accident that resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, who were also his instructors.

The magistrate, Olajumoke Somefu, postponed the case to February 25 after the prosecution requested a delay to facilitate the transfer of the case file to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s Office via the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal guidance.

Kayode, while operating the Lexus 570 SUV that collided with a parked truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, is charged with four offenses, such as dangerous driving resulting in death, careless and negligent driving, and driving without a valid national driver’s license.

Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, informed our correspondent that the family did not wish to have Kayode incarcerated.

    • Kayode: Joshua’s family questions if trial over crash ‘worth it’

“Our son (Joshua) is so much deep in religion and taking everything by faith, he will not want anything to happen to the driver,” Adedamola stated.

“I see closeness between them, and he will not like him to go to jail because he has got his own family, and the children will suffer.

“The family is also not interested in him being jailed because an accident can happen anywhere in the world, so they should please spare this man. Let’s move forward.”

Kayode, Joshua’s driver for three years, was previously given bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in the same amount.

Abiodun Olalekan, the defense attorney, opposed the prosecution’s application for an adjournment, claiming that the defense was prepared to proceed with the trial. Nonetheless, the magistrate allowed the prosecution’s application.

The incident left the former two-time heavyweight champion and Kayode with minor injuries.
