Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, his wife, and his son bail of ₦500 million each.

The bail conditions include the submission of landed property documents and travelling papers.

Justice Nwite admitted the defendants to bail following their arraignment on a 16-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In his ruling, the judge required that every defendant must provide two sureties of equal amount. The guarantors must possess real estate in the Maitama, Asokoro, or Gwarimpa areas of Abuja.

Justice Nwite ordered the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court to verify the title documents of the properties, while the sureties must also submit affidavits of means.

Malami was required to submit his international passport and other travel documents to the court and is barred from exiting the country without the court’s authorization.

The defendants and their guarantors were also instructed to provide two current passport photos each to the court registry.

Awaiting the finalization of their bail conditions, Justice Nwite directed that Malami be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The court scheduled February 17 to begin the trial in the matter.

The court fixed February 17 for the commencement of the trial in the case.

The EFCC had filed a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering against Malami, his son, Abdulaziz, and his wife over alleged financial transactions amounting to about N9 billion.

On December 18, 2025, the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja confirmed the EFCC’s continuing arrest of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Malami has been in EFCC prison since December 8, after apparently failing to meet the commission’s bail conditions.

Justice Babangida Hassan refused Malami’s bail plea from the anti-graft agency, stating that his detention was legitimate.
