Man United appoint Darren Fletcher as interim manager after Amorim sacking

Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Darren Fletcher as interim manager following the sacking of head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing a sudden end to the Portuguese’s troubled 14-month reign at Old Trafford.

The decision came less than 24 hours after Amorim publicly questioned his working relationship with senior club officials, hinting he would not be fully supported in the transfer market. After Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, the 40-year-old further fuelled speculation by insisting he wanted to operate as a full “manager, not the coach”, and admitting he was prepared to walk away when his contract expired in 18 months.

United moved swiftly on Monday, confirming Amorim had “departed his role as head coach” as the club looks to revive its Premier League campaign. Sitting sixth in the table, the hierarchy said the change was necessary to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish”.

Amorim’s entire coaching staff have also left the club. Sources indicate United’s leadership had grown increasingly unconvinced by the lack of visible progress or tactical evolution this season, despite significant backing when Amorim was appointed in November 2024 after United paid Sporting €11m to activate his release clause.

During his short stint, Amorim won 25 of his 63 matches in charge, making his tenure the briefest for a permanent United manager since David Moyes was dismissed eight months into the job in 2014.

Fletcher, currently United’s under-18s head coach, will take charge for Wednesday’s Premier League clash away at Burnley. While the 41-year-old has never managed at senior level, he is a familiar and trusted figure at the club, having previously served as technical director between 2021 and 2024.

A product of United’s academy, Fletcher made over 300 appearances for the club between 2002 and 2015, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008. He is expected to face the media on Tuesday ahead of his first match in interim charge.
