Vice President Kashim Shettima made a condolence visit to Aisha Buhari, the widow of late ex-president Muhammadu Buhari, and her family in London, United Kingdom, on Monday.

The Vice President also went to see the late ex-president’s nephew, Mamman Daura, who is recovering in a London hospital.

Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, confirmed this in a statement issued Monday headed ‘VP Shettima Pays Condolence Visit To Buhari’s Family In London.’

“The condolence visits were conducted while the Vice President awaits the conclusion of procedures and documentation for the repatriation of former President Buhari’s body to Nigeria,” Nkwocha noted.

Shettima is accompanied by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; and Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia.

Buhari died around 04:30 pm in a London clinic on Sunday.

Shettima had earlier arrived in London on President Bola Tinubu’s directive following the passing of the former president.

He arrived in London on Monday morning in the company of the president’s chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, along with the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, received him.

Tinubu announced the passing of his predecessor, who died on Sunday in London at approximately 4:30 pm.

He directed Shettima and Gbajabiamila to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.

Tinubu has mandated that flags be flown at half-staff to honour the deceased leader.

Buhari’s remains are scheduled to be interred in Daura on Tuesday, in accordance with Islamic rites.
