Adeyinka Adeleke, a councillorship candidate in Ogun State’s Abeokuta South Local Government Area, was assassinated by suspected gunmen on Saturday afternoon in the Jide Jones area.

The victim was alleged to be the All Progressives Congress Councillorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government Ward 15 in the upcoming November 16 Local Government elections.

According to reports, the perpetrators stormed the area in a tinted sedan and shot erratically.

According to a source familiar with the incident, the shooters attacked Adeleke, shot him, and then left him in a pool of blood.

A video of the incident appeared online, showing Adeleke’s lifeless body with sympathisers crying in the background.

An unidentified source told our correspondent that the incident caused tangible anxiety in the region as residents fled for safety.

The source said, “Some gunmen killed the All Progressives Congress councillorship candidate for Ibara Ward 15, Adeyinka Adeleke, today.

“The gunmen came in a tinted car, shot him, and hit him with stones till he died. There was tension in the area as people were scampering for safety.”

Another informant, who requested anonymity, stated that the assailants arrived in a tinted car, from which one of them stepped out, shot Adeyinka at close range, and then smashed his head, assuring his death.

During his life, the dead was believed to have worked for a transport union in Abeokuta’s Panseke district.

“The killing happened around 2 pm; it took everybody by surprise… No one knows if it is a cultist attack or not. The people in the area are already locking their shops; everywhere is tensed up now; it is so sad,” the source said.

A senior police official in the region verified the occurrence to our correspondent, saying that the family had taken the corpse away.

The police source said, “Yes, the incident happened. His family decided to take his body for burial.”

Meanwhile, Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, was not to react to messages left on her number as of the time of filing this story.
