Donald Trump has picked JD Vance, a former “never Trumper” Republican and Ohio Senator, as his vice presidential nominee.
On Monday, Republican National Convention (RNC) delegates formally nominated Mr. Vance, 39, after Trump stated on his social media platform that he had chosen him after “lengthy deliberation and thought.”.
Mr. Vance is a Yale-educated venture investor and the author of Hillbilly Elegy, a best-selling novel turned film.
He initially questioned his new running mate, privately claiming that Trump may be “America’s Hitler,” but has subsequently become a staunch supporter.
In the 2022 midterm elections, he was elected to the United States Senate with Trump’s support, his first time in public office.
After being confirmed as Trump’s running mate, Mr. Vance attacked Joe Biden on Fox News, alleging that Americans elected an “empty vessel” in 2020 who is now “an incapacitated president.”.
He claimed Democrats misled about Biden’s health, and voters may “reward or punish that behaviour” in November.
Mr. Vance went on to say that while he had said “bad things” about Trump, it was vital to recognise his error.
Mr. Vance, a native of Ohio, rose to prominence after the release of Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir about his blue-collar childhood and how it influenced his political views.
On the Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the book “championed the hardworking men and women of our country.”.
“As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our troops, and do everything he can to help me MAKE America GREAT AGAIN,” he continued.
Mr. Vance was confirmed at the RNC, which is being held this week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
On Monday, he entered the venue with his wife, Usha, and greeted delegates while a country song with the chorus “Let’s build America first” played.
Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Senate candidate, addressed the crowd in the basketball stadium where the event was held and said, “To JD, America First isn’t just a slogan. It’s his north star.”
“It’s an incredible pick,” said Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s son, at the RNC. “Truly a great choice.”
The decision was made prior to the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, two days after Trump escaped an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally.
In the aftermath, Mr. Vance stated that Democratic Party rhetoric had “led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”.
Trump has stated that he will tone down his RNC speech and advocate for national unity.
