Birmingham City has named Tony Mowbray as its new manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Mowbray takes over with the club 20th in the championship, becoming their third manager of the season after John Eustace and Wayne Rooney.

He joins following Rooney’s catastrophic spell, which saw the ex-Manchester United star witness a drop from sixth place in the table to relegation.

The Blues have won just two of their 15 games under Rooney and face an uphill task to change the tide.

Mowbray, who was fired by Sunderland in December, brings a plethora of experience and is eager to play in the Championship.

He led Sunderland to the play-offs last season, their first season back in the Championship.

Prior to his time with the Black Cats, he managed Blackburn.

He led them to the championship in 2018 and kept them in the second tier, placing seventh the season he was fired.

His management experience includes spells at Hibernian, West Brom, Celtic, Middlesbrough, and Coventry.

One of his biggest successes was securing promotion to the Premier League with West Brom in 2008 after winning the Championship.

Birmingham completed a takeover of American ownership in the summer, with NFL legend Tom Brady joining.

Mowbray’s first game will be against Swansea on Saturday, who have a new manager in Luke Williams, who previously managed Notts County.
