Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has nominated Tunji Disu as the next Commissioner of Police in Rivers State.
The IGP also transferred Nwonyi Emeka from Rivers State to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
On Thursday morning, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi issued a statement announcing the redeployments.
IGP Egbetokun also directed the appointment of 14 new Assistant Inspectors General of Police and 24 commissioners.
Following a political crisis that shook the oil-rich South-South state last week, Emeka was redeployed from the Rivers State Police Command and Disu was posted to the Command.
Following the impeachment process against Gov Sim Fubara, who claimed that police fired at him while he was inspecting a burnt portion of the Rivers State House of Assembly, some protesting youths sought Emeka’s redeployment last week.
Although the police disputed the claim, there was rising pressure on the IGP to restructure the Command.
Disu was previously the Head of the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and a former Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad.
Similarly, the IGP transferred CP Mohammed Barde from the Imo State Police Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to work on Safer Highways. CP Danjuma Aboki took the place of Barde. Imo State’s governorship election is set for November 11, 2023.
The IGP tasked the newly appointed officers with acting professionally and diligently in accordance with Force policy.
