Protesters took to the streets of Abuja to protest President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Asu Okang as a board member of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The protesters, in their hundreds, stormed the streets of Abuja to protest the appointment of a well-known member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Asu Okang, as the commissioner representing Cross River State on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The demonstration follows a similar one conducted in Calabar, the capital of Cross River, on Wednesday.

Tinubu approved the appointment of a new board of directors and management team for the NDDC on Tuesday, as announced in a statement by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale.

However, Tinubu’s selection of Okang as the Cross River Representative on the NDDC board provoked fury and demonstrations among APC supporters, who said that it would be unfair for the president to pick a PDP member to reap the benefits of their labour.

Led by a group of aggrieved party members under the aegis of Cross River APC Stakeholders, the demonstrators were seen chanting solidarity songs and displaying several placards that read, “Asu Okang is not an APC member.”

“Cross River is an APC state, not PDP,” and “Cross River rejects Asu Okang as NDDC commissioner.”

The protesters embarked on a peaceful walk from the popular Unity Fountain to the National Assembly.
