Wolves finally achieved their first Premier League victory of the season on the 20th try, easily overcoming fellow strugglers West Ham at Molineux.
Rob Edwards secured his initial win as Wolves head coach, marking the team’s first league triumph since defeating Leicester City on April 26, 2025.
In one go, the league’s last-place team increased their season points to six, owing to first-half strikes from Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan, and Mateus Mane.
A disappointing West Ham team could not produce a reaction after halftime and stayed in 18th place with 14 points—four behind Nottingham Forest above them.
Given that two of the league’s weakest defenses were in play, scoring was highly probable, and it took the home team just four minutes to find the net.
Hwang rushed into the area and smoothly maneuvered past Konstantinos Mavropanos before turning back for a free Arias to score from six yards—the Colombian’s initial goal in a Wolves jersey.
The early goal instilled confidence in the home team, who received a penalty after Mane was hit by the high boot of Soungoutou Magassa.
Hwang shot the penalty straight down the center to score 2-0 in the 31st minute, and then Mane netted a third goal 10 minutes later.
Unchallenged by a Hammers defender, the 18-year-old Mane unleashed a strong low shot from outside the area that went past Alphonse Areola at the near post, marking his first goal in senior football.
The latter half was more fairly contested, but the initial damage was irreversible for West Ham, whose winless streak has now extended to nine matches.
With the last season’s concluding weeks factored in, Wolves had gone 23 matches without a win in the Premier League.
It’s no surprise there was significant relief at Molineux when the final whistle blew on Saturday, given that this win came in a convincing manner.
A 1-1 tie with Manchester United on Tuesday concluded an 11-match losing streak in the league.
That provided Edwards—who was appointed on 12 November—his initial point in charge of Wolves and presented a glimmer of optimism for the faltering club.
The optimism was further elevated on Saturday as Wolves reinforced their determined performance at Old Trafford with this invaluable outcome.
Before the West Ham match, Wolves became the first team in English top-flight history, since Bolton Wanderers in 1902-03, to play 19 games at the start of a season without a victory.
For several months, they appeared destined to face a fate as bleak as Derby County’s in the 2007-08 season, when the Rams went 32 matches without a win after an early success against Newcastle.
