Nigerians have criticised the Cole family of Victoria Island, Lagos State, for rejecting the traditional marriage of their son Taiwo Olakitan Cole to his lover, actress Wofai Fada.

In a statement signed by Engr. Kunle Cole on behalf of the family on Sunday, the family noted that they did not “grant permission nor support” the wedding.

Chronicle NG reports that Wofai Fada, a popular actress and comedian, married her lover, Taiwo Olakitan Cole, in a traditional wedding ceremony that wowed admirers all over the internet.

Photos and videos from the ceremony soon circulated on social media platforms, prompting an outpouring of love and well wishes from fans and supporters alike.

Wofai Fada, who is known for her contagious humour and engaging performances, announced her marriage to Taiwo Olakitan Cole on Instagram on Saturday.

Responding to the news of the wedding, the Cole family urged the public to disregard the “purported” wedding.

The statement from the Cole family reads, “Images and videos come to our attention showing our son Taiwo getting married to a Wofai Ewa in a traditional ceremony in Ugep, Cross River State.

“This serves to notify all acquaintances, family, and friends that the Cole family of Victoria Island, Lagos, is not aware of any marriage ceremony of our son Taiwo Olakitan Cole, nor did we grant permission or support in this regard.

“As such, the person(s) parading themselves as new members of the Cole heritage by virtue of this purported event are neither known nor accepted by the family.

“All publications and documents being circulated about this are not to be considered.”

Reacting to the statement by the Cole family, Prof. Fiammari, an X user, notes, “The family should get out! If I were Taiwo, I would cut my family off. Then again, a lot of people don’t understand that the family you create is more important than the family you come from. Wofai and Taiwo, congratulations.”

Another X user, Rawlings Esq, notes that the couples are adults who should be allowed to make their decisions.

“Since both of them are adults, the Marriage Act stipulates that they can get married without the consent or permission of their parents,” Rawlings stated.

Bisi Juga Oluwagbemileke stated in his reaction, “Immediately one family is against the union; there is no need to commit the other family to sanctioning it; the couples do not need to go to Calabar for the wedding. They should travel to Dubai with four friends and marry. Damn the consequences.”

Mayowa described the rejection of the wedding as “disgusting behaviour from the family. I’m sending love and strength to the couple. They’ll need it for years to come.”

While Gucci Igwenyi described the statement from the Cole family as “the height of nonsense,” Damilola Coker notes that “The amazing thing about this Wofai wedding is the fact that the groom’s mother attended.

“It was not that none of the groom’s family attended. The groom’s parents are divorced, and the mother attended. It’s the father’s family that is acting funny.”
